HECTOR — The Wildcats ended a six-game winning streak by the Mountainburg Dragons as they won 26-22 on Friday at Linton Field and claimed the 2A-4 Conference football championship.
Mountainburg opened with back-to-back unanswered touchdowns in the first half, but Hector responded in kind to tie the score 14-14 at halftime.
The Wildcats scored first on a 4-yard run by Ethan Church with 2:18 left in the second quarter. Then, with 30 seconds until halftime, quarterback Cody Day connected with Gunner Garrison on a 43-yard pass to tie the score.
Mountainburg made it 22-14 with 7:59 left in the third, and Hector responded with two unanswered touchdowns to set the final score.
Blake Koehn scored on a 2-yard run with 4:53 left in the third, and Church scored on a 5-yard run with 2:46 still in the third.
After a scoreless fourth quarter, Hector held on to secure a first-round bye and home-field advantage in the second round of the Class 2A State Tournament.
Hector improved to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the 2A-4 Conference with the win. The Dragons fell to 7-2, 6-1.
